How to Keep Your Dog Calm During Halloween and Bonfire Night

Halloween and Bonfire Night are exciting times of year — for us humans, at least! But for many dogs (and cats), these celebrations can be frightening. Loud fireworks, flashing lights, and constant door knocks can leave pets stressed, anxious, or even hiding under the sofa.

If your furry friend struggles with noise or chaos, you’re not alone and there are simple steps you can take to help them feel calm and safe.

Here’s how to prepare your pet for the spooky season ahead 👇

1. Create a Safe Space

Start by setting up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat to when things get noisy. Use familiar bedding, blankets, toys and make sure they always have access to fresh water.

Close the curtains, dim the lights, and play soft background noise like gentle music or the TV to help mask sudden sounds from fireworks or trick-or-treaters.

💡 Tip: Try to stay calm yourself. Dogs and cats pick up on our emotions! If you’re relaxed, it helps them stay relaxed too.

2. Desensitise Before the Big Nights

If your pet is particularly nervous about fireworks, start playing low-level firework sounds a week or two beforehand to help them adjust gradually. Increase the volume slightly each day and reward calm behaviour with treats and praise.

This can make a big difference when the real fireworks begin.

3. Use Calming Sprays or Aromatherapy

Natural calming aids can be a game-changer for anxious pets. Animology Paws & Relax Aromatherapy Spray is specially formulated with lavender and chamomile - both known for their soothing properties.

A few sprays on your dog’s bedding, blanket, or around their space can help create a peaceful environment when things get loud outside.

✔️ Naturally calming scent
✔️ Safe for all coat types
✔️ Vegan & cruelty-free

It’s a simple, gentle way to help your dog feel at ease during stressful times.

4. Keep Pets Indoors and Secure

During Halloween and Bonfire Night, make sure pets stay indoors, even if they’re normally outdoor roamers. The unexpected noises and flashes can cause even the calmest animals to panic and run away.

Check windows, doors, and fences to ensure everything’s secure. If you’re answering the door to trick-or-treaters, keep pets safely in another room to prevent escapes.

5. Stay Prepared on Bonfire Night

Firework displays can start early and continue for several days, so it’s best to be prepared in advance:

  • Take dogs for walks before dark
  • Feed them early and make sure they’ve been to the toilet before fireworks start
  • Try not to leave them home alone
  • Stay close, stay calm, and offer gentle reassurance

Keep Calm, Stay Cosy, and Enjoy the Season

Halloween and Bonfire Night can be challenging for pets, but with a little planning your furry friend can feel safe, secure, and relaxed all season long.

Don’t wait until the bangs begin, stock up now and help your pet breeze through the celebrations.
